How to Let Visitors Subscribe to Your WordPress Blog via Email for Free

How to Let Visitors Subscribe to Your WordPress Blog via Email for Free

Want your readers to receive an email whenever you publish a new blog post?

WordPress doesn’t include a built-in email subscription system for blog posts. However, you can easily add one using a newsletter plugin.

In this tutorial, we’ll use Noptin, a WordPress newsletter and email marketing plugin, to let visitors subscribe to your blog and automatically notify them whenever you publish something new.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Add an email subscription form to your WordPress blog.
  • Allow readers to subscribe without creating an account.
  • Automatically email subscribers when you publish a new post.
  • Customize your notification emails and test the complete setup.

You can get started with the free version of Noptin.

Step 1: Install Noptin

First, you’ll need a plugin to collect subscribers and send the notification emails.

We’re using Noptin because it handles both tasks directly inside WordPress. You don’t need separate plugins for your subscription forms and post-notification emails.

To install it:

  1. Open your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  3. Search for Noptin.
  4. Click Install Now, followed by Activate.

Once activated, you’ll see Noptin in your WordPress dashboard.

Noptin includes subscription forms, subscriber management, newsletters, and automated emails.

You can now start collecting subscribers.

Step 2: Add an Email Subscription Form to Your Blog

Your visitors need somewhere to enter their email addresses.

The simplest option is to use Noptin’s default subscription form. However, you can also create a customized form if you want more control over how it looks.

Option A: Use the default subscription form

Open the page or post where you want visitors to subscribe.

Add a Shortcode block and enter:

[noptin]

Publish or update the page.

Noptin will automatically display its default newsletter subscription form.

You can also add the form to your sidebar or footer so readers can subscribe from anywhere on your website.

Option B: Create a custom subscription form

If you want a form that matches your site’s design:

  1. Navigate to Noptin → Subscription Forms.
  2. Click Add New.
  3. Give your form a name, such as Blog Updates.
  4. Choose a form type, template, and color theme.
  5. Customize the fields and submit button.
  6. Save your form.

Noptin supports several types of subscription forms, including:

  • Inline forms: Add signup forms inside blog posts or pages.
  • Widget forms: Display a signup form in your sidebar or footer.
  • Popup forms: Invite visitors to subscribe while browsing your site.
  • Sliding forms: Display a signup form that slides into view.

For most blogs, a simple form at the end of each article is a good starting point.

You can use a message such as:

Enjoyed this article?

Get our latest WordPress tips delivered straight to your inbox. Subscribe below, and we’ll email you whenever we publish something new.

Keep the form short. Asking for an email address is usually enough when all you need is to notify readers about new posts.

For more customization options, see the Noptin subscription form guide.

Step 3: Configure Subscription Confirmation

Before sending blog updates, make sure readers understand what they’re subscribing to.

For example, your form could say:

Subscribe to receive an email whenever we publish a new blog post. You can unsubscribe at any time.

You can also enable double opt-in in Noptin.

With double opt-in enabled, new subscribers receive a confirmation email containing a link they must click before their subscription becomes active.

This helps verify email addresses and reduces unwanted subscriptions.

To learn how to enable it, follow the Noptin double opt-in guide.

Once you’ve finished configuring the form, submit a test subscription using an email address you own.

You should see the subscriber appear in your Noptin subscribers list.

At this point, visitors can subscribe to your blog. However, they won’t receive automatic notifications about new posts until we configure the next step.

Step 4: Automatically Email Subscribers When You Publish New Posts

This is where Noptin’s automation features come in.

Instead of manually writing a newsletter whenever you publish a blog post, you can configure Noptin to send an email automatically.

Here’s how:

  1. Open your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Noptin → Emails → Automated Emails.
  3. Click New Automated Email.
  4. Select Post from the available content types.
  5. Choose New Post Notification.
  6. Select Noptin Subscribers as the recipients.

Noptin will open the email editor, where you can customize the notification subscribers receive.

Customize the notification email

By default, Noptin creates an email containing information about your newly published post, including its title, excerpt, featured image, and a link to read the article.

You can customize the subject and email body using the WordPress block editor.

For example, your subject could be:

Just published: [[post.title]]

The email itself might contain:

Hello,

We've just published a new article we thought you might enjoy.

[Post Title]

[Post Excerpt]

Thanks for reading!

You can also change the design, add your logo, and personalize the email using Noptin’s dynamic tags.

Once you’re satisfied, use Send Test Email to preview the notification in your inbox.

Then click Publish to activate the automation.

That’s it!

Whenever you publish a new WordPress blog post, Noptin will automatically send a notification to your selected subscribers.

For more advanced settings, see How to Send New Post Notification Emails in WordPress.

Step 5: Make Sure Your Emails Reach Subscribers

Setting up automatic notifications is only half the process. You also need to make sure your emails are delivered successfully.

By default, Noptin uses WordPress’s email sending system.

Depending on your hosting provider, that might be sufficient for a small mailing list. However, some web hosts limit outgoing emails or have deliverability issues.

For more reliable sending, consider connecting WordPress to a dedicated email delivery service.

Popular options include Amazon SES, Brevo, Mailgun, and SendGrid.

You can connect these services using an SMTP plugin or a supported email integration.

It’s also worth configuring SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records for your sending domain.

These authentication records help receiving mail servers verify that your emails are legitimate.

See How to Send Noptin Emails Using SMTP for instructions.

Step 6: Test the Complete Subscription Process

Before inviting readers to subscribe, test everything from beginning to end.

  1. Open your blog in a private browser window.
  2. Find your newsletter subscription form.
  3. Subscribe using an email address you control.
  4. Confirm the subscription if double opt-in is enabled.
  5. Verify that your email appears in Noptin’s subscriber list.
  6. Publish a new test blog post.
  7. Check whether the post notification arrives in your inbox.

Also verify that the email includes the correct post title, image, and link.

If the email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder, email sending configuration, and Noptin’s campaign settings.

Once everything works, your visitors can subscribe to your blog and receive automatic updates without any ongoing manual work.

Can Readers Subscribe Only to Certain Categories?

Yes. You don’t necessarily have to send every new blog post to every subscriber.

For example, suppose your WordPress blog covers:

  • WordPress tutorials
  • WooCommerce tips
  • Website security

Some readers might only want updates about WooCommerce.

Noptin supports subscriber lists, tags, custom fields, and conditional rules that let you create more targeted notifications.

You could create separate subscription preferences and notification campaigns, so subscribers receive emails about topics they’re interested in.

This is especially useful for blogs covering several unrelated subjects.

What If You Don’t Want to Email Subscribers After Every Post?

You can send scheduled blog updates instead.

For example, if you publish several articles each week, your readers might prefer one email every Friday summarizing the week’s new content.

Noptin supports automated post digest emails, allowing you to send daily, weekly, or monthly summaries of your latest published posts.

This works particularly well for blogs that publish frequently.

Instead of receiving several separate notifications, subscribers get a single email containing links to your recent articles.
